The Hellenic Cultural Center of New York welcomes the solo exhibition of Angelos Floros titled “Portraiture in the Selfie’s Age” on Saturday, June 20, 2024, from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm. This interactive exhibition is a one-of-a-kind experience not to be missed.

About the exhibition
Come and live the experience of portraiture. The project ‘Portraiture in the Age of Selfies’ allows you to experience the emotions of the painter and the model in the age of selfies. The drawing using algorithms is transformed into sound frequencies creating a sound environment of immersion in the individuals involved in the portraiture.

The art project “Portraiture in the Age of Selfies” is a performance that wants to bring back the traditional condition of the painter and the model in the age of selfies. Visitors – in pairs, can engage in a portrait painting, assuming one person to be the painter and the other the model. The drawing with the use of algorithms is transformed into sound frequencies creating a sound environment of immersion for the people involved in the portrait.

In the field of painting, the traditional relationship between the artist and the model is defined by a collaborative and interpretive process, deeply influenced by the elements of time and pose. Historically, the artist’s role has involved observing and capturing the likeness and essence of the sitter through their unique artistic representation. Time plays a crucial role in this traditional setting.

This extended engagement encourages a deeper understanding and connection, allowing the artist to capture subtleties and depths that a moment cannot convey. The passage of time contributes to the richness and complexity of the final work, revealing layers of the character of both the model and the painter.

Thus, the traditional artist-model relationship in painting stands in stark contrast to the self-directed, instantaneous nature of selfies. Each approach offers distinct advantages and limitations, highlighting different aspects of human identity and expression.

The Hellenic Cultural Center NYC and the FAMA Theater Group NY proudly announce their collaboration with the Ionian University of Greece. This partnership will encompass activities on a wide range of topics.

As part of this collaboration, we are pleased to present on Sunday, June 23rd,  a series of short films titled “𝐓𝐄𝐄𝐍𝐆𝐀𝐆𝐄 𝐇𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐋𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐒” by the Department of Audio and Visual Arts, Ionian University.

Location: THESPIS Theater at the Hellenic Cultural Center, Astoria, New York
Time: 25-02 Newtown Ave, Queens, NY 11102

The places where we spend our childhood and adolescence hold a special place in our hearts and significantly shape our identity. For students, returning to these familiar places offers an opportunity for reflection and reassessment.

Many students, now distant from the places where they grew up, see them with a sense of nostalgia and romance, as do people of the diaspora. They recall the neighbourhoods where they played with their friends, the schools where they took their first steps in learning, and the family ties formed through pleasant and unpleasant daily moments.

At the same time, the experience of student life and the acquisition of new knowledge and experiences allows students to see the places of their childhood and adolescence in a new light. On returning, they become aware of the importance and influence that their family and urban environment had on their development. This reappraisal lens can bring a new appreciation of the cultural and historical heritage of these places, as well as the social and economic challenges they face. Places of childhood and adolescence serve as fixed reference points.

In summary, the students view the places where they spent their childhood and adolescence with a variety of emotions, from nostalgia and reflection to responsibility, optimism and pessimism. These places remain an important part of their identity as they continue life’s journey through education.
In this special action, selected student works of the undergraduate course ‘Interactive Interventions in Public Space’ of the Department of Audio and Visual Arts of the Ionian University, supervised by Angelos Floros, Assistant Professor of the Ionian University and collaborator Martha Gogakou, PhD candidate of the Ionian University, are presented to the Greeks of the diaspora.
